Leur r\u00f4le est en fait de prot\u00e9ger le village des esprits malveillants et de la sorcellerie, et de pr\u00e9server la communaut\u00e9 du malheur et des maladies. Originaire du \u00ab\u00a0bois sacr\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, sanctuaire des anc\u00eatres et des esprits de la brousse, ce masque puise sa force dans une association iconographique complexe\u00a0: la robustesse du buffle, la sagesse de l\u2019antilope, l\u2019agressivit\u00e9 du phacoch\u00e8re et la puissance du crocodile. Cet objet est exceptionnel tant par la vigueur de son ex\u00e9cution que par sa taille.
