Il occupe\u00a0un site spectaculaire: un large plateau de gr\u00e8s primaire, \u00e9rod\u00e9 par le vent, qui se brise en surplomb de la plaine de Gondo-S\u00e9no sur\u00a0une falaise ocre, escarp\u00e9e de quelques 260 kilom\u00e8tres, la falaise de Bandiagara<\/p>\n<p>Les Dogon sont avant tout des cultivateurs (essentiellement du mil) et des forgerons. Ils sont r\u00e9put\u00e9s pour leur cosmogonie et leurs sculptures.<\/p>\n<p>La sculpture dogon, masques et statuettes, est avant tout rituelle. Les statuettes conserv\u00e9es dans des sanctuaires familiaux repr\u00e9sentent des anc\u00eatres ou des \u00eatres mythiques. Certaines d&rsquo;entre elles, les plus anciennes probablement, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 trouv\u00e9es \u00e0 demi enfouies dans des grottes, couvertes d&rsquo;un d\u00e9p\u00f4t rouge\u00e2tre \u00e9pais, sang d&rsquo;animaux sacrifi\u00e9s. La diversit\u00e9 des formes est remarquable. La force et la vie de la sculpture dogon traduisent celles de la mythologie et du rituel. Ces statuettes en bois sont l&rsquo;\u0153uvre des forgerons, qui en font aussi de plus abstraites, en fer, aux bras sans articulations comme l&rsquo;\u00e9taient, selon le mythe, ceux des premiers
